Scope 3 Community of Practice

29 January 2026 @ 11:00 AM12:00 PM
Many organisations have developed methods to measure their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, but Scope 3 (emissions from things we do not own, or those in our value chain) is much harder. This Community of Practice is for organisations across the UK, as we work to find opportunities for consistency in how we understand and measure our Scope 3 carbon emissions. The CoP is both a learning network and an action network. As a learning network, it provides a space for peer-support, the exchange of information, and increased co-ordination around a consistent approach to understanding, communicating and measuring Scope 3 emissions. As an action network, it identifies key actions to take and creates processes for these to be undertaken collaboratively. In January’s session,CoP member Laura Foster, Climate Action Engagement Manager at Gloucestershire County Council, will share her perspective, ahead of a broader discussion of the state of play in Scope 3 and procurement: For local authorities and many other service organisations, procurement of goods and services make up the largest component of its carbon footprint. They are large organisations which are anchored in place and therefore have the potential to have a significant influence locally through their tendering. Many councils have declared a climate emergency. However, they are also facing huge financial pressures with carbon reporting and reduction within England having no statutory requirement. Laura will discuss her personal take on the challenges of making changes to standard contracts, discuss different approaches councils have taken, and how to positively drive change within the context of a politically and financially challenging backdrop.
