When a school tips a community: enabling conditions in Moss Side
St Mary’s is a primary school in Moss Side, Manchester, a neighbourhood that has spent decades being told a story about itself by other people. Over a number of years, the school set out to change that through a series of enabling conditions: children’s rights and pupil voice as the school’s building blocks, restorative practice instead of punishment, a leadership team willing to be courageous, and a deliberate opening of the school’s doors to families, faith groups, the council and the community around it.
Then something tipped. The way children, parents and the wider community talked about themselves and their place changed, quickly, and it stayed changed. I was in the room doing engagement work when I recognised it as a positive social tipping point and the framework in practice.
In this session I’ll share the St Mary’s story, the enabling conditions for change, how the conditions for change accelerated, and how I’m now turning it into a toolkit for other anchor institutions. Then I’d like your help with a live challenge.
