SUMMARY:How can we disagree better over sustainable futures? Community of Practice launch
DESCRIPTION:Following the hybrid event in April\, How can we disagree better over sustainable futures?\, we are launching an online Community of Practice to continue the conversation and hold a regular\, free\, and open space for all to share ideas\, challenges\, practical actions\, and collaborative opportunities to deepen our shared understanding of ‘what does disagreeing better actually look like?’ \nIn this introductory session we will share our purpose for the Community of Practice\, as a space to recognise and value different types of knowledge – e.g. academic\, community\, lived experience\, embodied – while acknowledging the tensions between them. We will also share and run through practical examples of the three-tier structure of what the CoP will cover: \n\n\n\nSharing good practice – tools\, research\, case studies\, techniques\nApplying a critical assessment of what else is needed – e.g. learning how to hold discomfort\, grounding research in what communities need\nHolding space for the systemic barriers – what is and what is not within our control/influence\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome\, and please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk to sign up. There is no formal membership or commitment\, but there will be invitations for members to share their contexts\, experiences\, and ideas at future sessions. \nIf you can’t join in July but would like to be included in the CoP list going forward\, please fill out this very short survey to give your consent for me to keep your contact details on file.

SUMMARY:Adaptation Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Adaptation Community of Practice is open to all organisations across the UK that are working to develop their understanding of and engagement with adaptation. We hear from expert speakers\, test and feedback on new ideas and resources\, and collectively discuss how to implement the latest information into how we work individually and together. \nThe CoP acts a learning network and an action network\, providing a space for peer-support\, the exchange of information\, and increased co-ordination around a consistent approach to understanding\, communicating and implementing climate adaptation measures. \nIn July\, Heather Jermy\, General Manager at the National Trust’s Blickling Estate\, will share her multidisciplinary approach to water management through heritage and conservation work in response to regular flooding. Focusing on long term ambition\, and a series of interconnected projects across nature\, people\, and buildings\, Heather will walk us through her case study in detail\, including their partnership with Bayt al-Razzaz\, an historic palace in Cairo facing similar adaptation challenges. \nSessions last for 90 minutes\, with an extra 30 minutes held for open discussion for anyone who wants to stay. \nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Personalised Ecologies Huddle taster session
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite here. \nStarting in September 2026\, the Green Futures Network will be running a Huddle on Personalised Ecologies\, and how this research can be applied in practice to organisations and individuals who are working to increase our engagement with the natural world. \n\n\nA Personalised Ecology is a model for better understanding the interactions between individual people and their ecological surroundings. It can help us move beyond an objective view of the natural world and instead to examine and explore the nuances in how those interactions inform our experiences and relationship with nature. \nThis one-hour session will: \n\nOutline the latest research into Personalised Ecologies\nDemonstrate how you can use the Huddle process to shape how you and others can use and develop the research in your work\nExplain how to apply for the Huddle\nAnswer any other questions you might have\n\nWhat is a Personalised Ecology? \nIt can be simply described as the direct (especially sensory) interactions that each of us has with nature. \n\nWe all have one\nThey are unique\nThey ebb and flow over time (short and long-term)\nThey will be different in different parts of our lives (e.g. weekend\, weekday)\n\nYou can read more about the idea in this academic paper from 2018. \nWhat is a Huddle? \nHuddles are an ecosystem of support for peer-led learning and action\, developed by Huddlecraft. It is a process that has already been used by the Green Futures Network to develop the Positive Tipping Points Toolkit. You can read about participants’ experience of the Huddle process in blogs here and here. \n\nIf I hadn’t huddled\, I would never have had the courage to go for this project and this piece of funding in the way that I am now. \nI’ve met some lovely people. And in terms of my life and shifting career\, it gave me a language to build and share it on. \n\nWho is this for? \nThis opportunity is for you if: \n\nYou work to support the restoration of\, or engagement with\, nature.\nYou thrive when learning with others.\nYou are energised by exploring the complexity of how we experience the world around us.\n\nYou might be a facilitator or coach\, keen to apply Personalised Ecologies to your work. Or perhaps you are part of an organisation or group working to support others to engage with nature\, and looking to find new tools and frameworks to support this.. We will all bring our own stories of change to this work\, and collectively test and refine our applications of the research into something that can be opened out into the wider world. \nMeeting every two weeks\, we will start with a journey through the latest research into Personalised Ecologies\, and the wider work it is rooted in\, before reshaping it into something new. We will begin with getting to know each other\, and our own stories of working in\, with\, and as part of nature\, using Personalised Ecologies as a guide. Over the following months\, we will each have the chance to take an aspect of the framework – which could be something missing – and work on it in our own contexts. Towards the end we will bring it all together\, with the opportunity to share what we have created with a wider audience.

SUMMARY:Scope 3 Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Many organisations have developed methods to measure their Scope 1 and 2 emissions\, but Scope 3 (emissions from things we do not own\, or those in our value chain) is much harder. This Community of Practice is for organisations across the UK\, as we work to find opportunities for consistency in how we understand and measure our Scope 3 carbon emissions.\n\n\n\nThe CoP is both a learning network and an action network. As a learning network\, it provides a space for peer-support\, the exchange of information\, and increased co-ordination around a consistent approach to understanding\, communicating and measuring Scope 3 emissions. As an action network\, it identifies key actions to take and creates processes for these to be undertaken collaboratively.\n\nIn January’s session\,CoP member Laura Foster\, Climate Action Engagement Manager at Gloucestershire County Council\, will share her perspective\, ahead of a broader discussion of the state of play in Scope 3 and procurement:\n\nFor local authorities and many other service organisations\, procurement of goods and services make up the largest component of its carbon footprint. They are large organisations which are anchored in place and therefore have the potential to have a significant influence locally through their tendering. \n\nMany councils have declared a climate emergency. However\, they are also facing huge financial pressures with carbon reporting and reduction within England having no statutory requirement. Laura will discuss her personal take on the challenges of making changes to standard contracts\, discuss different approaches councils have taken\, and how to positively drive change within the context of a politically and financially challenging backdrop. \n\nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Adaptation CoP: Resilience Community Hubs
DESCRIPTION:In this Adaptation Community of Practice opt-in session\, we’ll be joined by Parisa Wright\, Founder\, Chief Vision & Partnerships Officer\, Greener & Cleaner \nBuilding Local Sustainability & Resilience – A New Type of Community Hub? \nSince 2022\, Greener & Cleaner (a community group\, turned CIC\, turned charity) has been piloting a unique Community Hub model that transforms a prominent\, vacant shopping centre unit into a thriving\, reliable\, and engaging community space – building community sustainability\, adaptability\, and resilience. \nIn a time of cost of living crisis\, mental health crisis\, loneliness crisis and unemployment\, this is a multi-impact model that can be scaled up and down. A model using a space at the heart of a community to provide a permanent and reliable Community Hub with pop up events and projects out in the wider community. \nWith over 1\,000 visitors a month and additional events and projects out in the community\, their Community Hub pilot in Bromley is a place where local people from all walks of life share their skills and knowledge to address social\, economic\, wellbeing\, and environmental needs – all through the lens of sustainability. \nParisa will share details about the model and offer practical ideas and advice on how to create a more inclusive and permanent community sustainability space/project – which also boosts local adaptability and resilience – with the potential for further (free/funded) one-on-one consulting and support. \nFind out more: https://www.greenerandcleaner.co.uk/the-hub-from-greener-and-cleaner/ \nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:GFN CoP Session: Turning Minority Insight into Majority Action
DESCRIPTION:This is another cross-CoP session\, open to all Green Futures Network Communities of Practice members: Adaptation\, Scope 3\, Doughnut Economics\, Positive Tipping Points\, and Cornerstone Indicators. \n  \nTo start off 2026 with optimism and focus\, we will be joined by Kasper Bjørkskov\, architect\, activist\, and founder of No Objectives. a not-for-profit research and design agency. Kasper will share his experience mobilising change in civic and industry systems\, through the theory and then the practice\, via the excellent Reduction Roadmap. \n  \nThe non-profit association Reduction Roadmap works to translate the Paris Agreement\, the Montreal Agreement\, and the Planetary Boundaries into industry-specific targets in Danish construction based on the latest international research. \n  \nThe roadmap concepts identify where we are today\, where we need to go\, and the speed at which we must reduce our environmental impact to get within Earth’s safe operating space. The result is science-based transformation tools and a call-to-action for the Danish building industry and political actors\, working to align all stakeholders with a commitment to the physical limits of the Paris Agreement\, the Montreal Agreement\, and Earth’s safe operating space to respect the Planetary Boundaries. \n  \nThe roadmap concepts are developed in a cross-sectoral partnership with advisors\, research institutes\, architects\, and NGOs within the building industry and are based on the latest scientific knowledge of human impact on the planet. The Reduction Roadmap concepts\, frameworks\, and methodologies are purposefully developed to be adaptable on an international scale. \nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

\nSeptember’s session will feature an update on the Local Climate Adaptation Tool\, including a focus on techniques to communicate narratives of future heat variations. \nSessions last for 90 minutes\, with an extra 30 minutes held for open discussion for anyone who wants to stay. \nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Scope 3 Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Many organisations have developed methods to measure their Scope 1 and 2 emissions\, but Scope 3 (emissions from things we do not own\, or those in our value chain) is much harder. This Community of Practice is for organisations across the UK\, as we work to find opportunities for consistency in how we understand and measure our Scope 3 carbon emissions. \n\n\n\nThe CoP is both a learning network and an action network. As a learning network\, it provides a space for peer-support\, the exchange of information\, and increased co-ordination around a consistent approach to understanding\, communicating and measuring Scope 3 emissions. As an action network\, it identifies key actions to take and creates processes for these to be undertaken collaboratively. September’s session will focus on using data as an enabler for change. CoP member Fraser Browning (formerly of the University of Exeter’s Sustainability Team\, now of Kerb Carbon) will share his work on moving from measurement to action on Scope 3\, including how we can combine data principles with a framework for behavioural change. The session is planned to last one hour\, but I am about to send a calendar invitation for 90 minutes to give us some space for further discussion. \n\n\n\nTo join please email Peter at gfn@exeter.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Positive Tipping Points Toolkit Public Launch
DESCRIPTION:Following the publishing of the 2023 Global Tipping Points Report\, a small collection of practitioners have been co-creating an open-source toolkit to help translate and apply the Positive Tipping Points framework for practical use in social and environmental change. \nJoin this free online event to get a guided tour through the toolkit\, experience some of the tools in action\, and learn about the ongoing support available for anyone who wants to use the toolkit in their work. \nThe Toolkit development has been led by the University of Exeter’s Green Futures Network\, in collaboration with a group of people working in different contexts from around the world. At the launch event you will hear stories from those who have been involved\, and how they have been using the Toolkit in their specific contexts. \nThe Positive Tipping Points Toolkit helps us understand how complex systems change in practice\, and how we can bring our intention and agency to create the conditions for transformation in social and environmental systems. Its goal is to make the cutting edge research into tipping points more accessible\, relevant\, and practical. \n \nSign up via https://ptptoolkit.eventbrite.co.uk
